Hundreds, in fact thousands, of scholars have compiled collections of forty hadith of the Prophet peace be upon him but none of them have had the acceptance and approval like that of The Forty Hadith of al-Nawawi. Twenty, in fact, hundreds, of scholars have written commentaries on Sahih Muslim but never have had the fame of Sharh al-Imaam al-Nawawi, known as al-Minhaaj fl Sharh Saheeh Muslim ibn al-Hajaaj. The same is true for the remainder of his writings. Upon al-Nawawi be the mercy and pleasure of Allah.

Here are 40 Hadeeth by Imam Nawawi.

Hadith #8 - Concept of Struggle - Imam Al-Nawawi 40 Hadith

These hadeeth need to be understood in depth. There are commentries of these 40 hadiths that really helps to understand many concepts talked about in these hadeeths. Both of these books are excellent commentries and if you get chance, do read them and try to apply the lessons learnt in these hadeeths. Thus, he whose migration hijrah was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated.

No traces of journeying were visible on him, and none of us knew him. Inform me about Islam. He came to teach you your religion.

Thereafter, it is a lump looking like it has been chewed for a similar period. Then an angel is sent to him, who breathes the ruh spirit into him. This Angel is commanded to write Four decrees: that he writes down his provision rizqhis life span, his deeds, and whether he will be among the wretched or the blessed. He who guards against doubtful things keeps his religion and honour blameless, and he who indulges in doubtful things indulges in fact in unlawful things, just as a shepherd who pastures his flock round a preserve will soon pasture them in it.

Beware, every king has a preserve, and the things Allah has declared unlawful are His preserves. Beware, in the body there is a flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and behold, it is the heart. Verily the people before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their Prophets. He does not accept but that which is pure. Allah commands the believers with what He commanded the Messengers.

O Lord! Let whosoever believes in Allah and in the Last Day honour his neighbour. Let whosoever believes in Allah and in the Last Day honour his guest. He did not interpret the mutashabihator 'unapparent in meaning' verses and hadiths in a literal anthropomorphic way.

He states in his commentary of a hadith that:. This is one of the "hadiths of the attributes," about which scholars have two positions. The first is to have faith in it without discussing its meaning, while believing of Allah Most High that "there is nothing whatsoever like unto Him" Qur'anand that He is exalted above having any of the attributes of His creatures.

The second is to figuratively explain it in a fitting way, scholars who hold this position adducing that the point of the hadith was to test the slave girl: Was she a monotheist, who affirmed that the Creator, the Disposer, the Doer, is Allah alone and that He is the one called upon when a person making supplication du'a faces the sky--just as those performing the prayer salat face the Kaaba, since the sky is the qibla of those who supplicate, as the Kaaba is the qibla of those who perform the prayer--or was she a worshipper of the idols which they placed in front of themselves?

So when she said, In the sky, it was plain that she was not an idol worshiper. He was born at Nawa near DamascusSyria. Other boys of his age used to force him to play with them, but Imam Nawawi would always avoid the play and would remain busy with the recitation of the Noble Qur'an. When they tried to domineer and insisted on his joining their games, he bewailed and expressed his no concern over their foolish action. On observing his sagacity and profundity, a special love and affection developed in my heart for young Nawawi.

I approached his teacher and urged him to take exceptional care of this lad as he was to become a great religious scholar. His teacher asked whether I was a soothsayer or an astrologer. I told him I am neither soothsayer nor an astrologer but Allah caused me to utter these words.

He had no academic or scholarly atmosphere and there were no religious academies or institutes where one could earn excellence in religious learning, so his father took him to Damascus, which was considered the center of learning and scholarship, and the students from far and wide gathered there for schooling.

During that period, there were more than three hundred institutes, colleges and universities in Damascus. Madrasah was named after him. Noted and eminent teachers of the period taught in that Madrasah. Imam Nawawi says, "I studied in this institution for two years.

During my stay in Madrasah Rawahiyah, I never had complete rest and lived on the limited food supplied by the institution. When it became irresistible as a human being, he would lean and slumber for a while against the support of books. After a short duration he would again be hard at his scholastic pursuits.

He studied in Damascus from the age of 18 and after making the pilgrimage in he settled there as a private scholar. As a judge, he was much sought after for advice and adjudication of disputes. During his stay at Damascus, he studied from more than twenty teachers.

Imam studied Hadith, Islamic Jurisprudence, its principles, syntax and Etymology.

Nawawi drew the ire of Mamluk Sultan Rukn al-Din Baybarswhen he petitioned on behalf of residents of Damascus who sought relief from heavy tax burdens during a drought that lasted many years.

They will not keep me from advising the ruler, for I believe that this is obligatory upon me and others. An-Nawawi's lasting legacy is his contribution to hadith literature through his momentous works Forty Hadiths and Riyadh as-Saaliheen.

He had devoted all his time for learning and scholarship. Other than reading and writing, he spent his time contemplating on the interacted and complex issues and in finding their solutions. Imaam an-Nawawi had three distinctive commendable qualities in his person. If anybody has only one out of these three, people turn to him in abundance for guidance. First, having knowledge and its dissemination. Second, to evade completely from the worldly inclinations, and the third, inviting to all that is good Islam enjoining virtue and forbidding vice.If you are not able to attend in person, please feel free to listen in via our Spreaker channel or our telelink line at Hadeeth 18 Explanation of 40 Hadith Nawawi — 12 — Hadeeth 19 Explanation of 40 Hadith Nawawi — 13 — Hadeeth 19 Explanation of 40 Hadith Nawawi — 14 — Explanation of 40 Hadith Nawawi — 15 — Hadith no.

By the One, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the actions of the people of Paradise until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it.

This is a popular small book in which the author gathered forty two of the sayings of prophet Muhammed salla Allahu alihi wa sallam. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Eternal Guardian of the heavens and the earths, Disposer of all created beings, Despatcher of Messengers may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon them all who were sent to those they have been entrusted to guide and to reveal the religious laws to, with positive signs and clear-cut proofs.

I praise Him for His favours and ask Him to increase His grace and generosity. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone.

He having no associate, the One, the Subduer, the Generous, the Pardoner, and I bear witness that our master Muhammed is His servant and His messenger, His dear one and His beloved, the best of created beings, who was honoured with the precious Quran, the enduring miracle through the passing of the years, and with the sunnahs that enlighten spiritual guides; our master.

Muhammed, singled out for pithiness of speech and tolerance in religion may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, upon the rest of the prophets and messengers, and upon all their families and upon the rest of godly persons.

Scholars of hadith are agreed that it is a weak hadith despite its many lines of transmission. The religious scholars, may Allah be pleased with them, have composed innumerable works in this field. I have asked Allah Almightly for guidance in bringing together forty hadith in emulation of those eminent religious leaders and guardians of Islam.

Furthermore, there were some religious scholars who brought together forty hadiths on the basic rules of religion, on subsidiary matters, or on jihad, while others did so on asceticism, on rules of conduct or on sermons. All these are godly aims-may Allah be pleased with those who pursued them.

I give them without the chains of authorities so as to make it easier to memorise them and to make them of wider benefit if Allah Almighty wills, and I append to them a section explaining abstruse expressions. Note here every person wishing to attain the Hereafter should know these hadith because of the important matters they contain and the directions they give in respect of all forms of obedience, this being obvious to anyone who has reflected upon it. On Allah do I rely and depend and to Him do I entrust myself; to Him be praise and grace, and with Him is success and immunity [to errors].

On the authority of Omar bin Al-Khattab, who said : I heared the messenger of Allah salla Allah u alihi wa sallam say :. Thus he whose migration was for Allah and His messenger, his migration was for Allah and His messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated. One day while we were sitting with the messenger of Allah there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journeying were to be seen on him and none of us knew him.

He walked up and sat down by the prophet. On the authority of Abdullah bin Masud, who said : the messenger of Allah, and he is the truthful, the believed narrated to us:. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor, but he who falls into doubtful matters falls into that which is unlawful, like the shepherd who pastures around a sanctuary, all but grazing therein.

Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh which, if it be whole, all the body is whole and which, if it be diseased, all of it is diseased.

Truly it is the heart. On the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said:I heared the messenger of Allah say:. It was only their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their prophets that destroyed those who were before you.
